The One
The shepherd has one hundred sheep,
each worthy of watchful care,
grazing in the pasture,
sweet grass for all to share.
And as he gathers all within
the fold – so safe at night.
Ninety and nine are counted for,
one’s wandered out of sight.
Good shepherd leaves the ninety nine
still safe within the fold,
out to find the one lost lamb,
to rescue from the cold.
Those left behind do wonder why-
the importance of one so lost,
happy to see the shepherd return
with one, not to know the cost.
Asleep within the shepherd’s arms;
don’t you know just who I am?
And the cost it took, the shepherd’s toll,
saves me – that one lost lamb.
